The African American Health Institute in San Bernardino has sent a team of community leaders to participate in an annual medical conference today through Saturday in the Bahamas.

The annual conference of the Medical Association of the Bahamas features guest speakers on topics including gangs, teen pregnancy and men's health.

About 150 people are attending the conference, said Dr. Robin Roberts, past-president of the Medical Association of the Bahamas. It includes local speakers from the Bahamas and representatives of the University of Miami and Harvard University teaching hospitals.

The San Bernardino team includes Dr. V. Diane Woods, president and chief executive officer of the African American Health Institute of San Bernardino County; Kim Carter, founder and executive director of Time for Change Foundation; Alton L. Garrett Jr., the institute's board chairman; Dr. A.J. Rogers, president of the J.W. Vines Medical Society; Katie Greene, the institute's health policy analyst; Patricia Green-Lee, president and chief executive officer of Brothers and Sisters in Action; A. Majadi, president and chief executive officer of Jadi Community Resource Development; Terrance Stone, president and chief executive officer of Young Visionaries; Sandra Waters, of the Inland Empire Black Nurses Association; and Alvina Thomas, the institute's administrative assistant.

Presentations by the San Bernardino group include talks on reducing violence in youth in inner cities by Majadi, implementing the African American Health Initiative by Woods, and women and incarceration by Carter.

The African American Health Institute of San Bernardino County, organized in 2006, works to increase awareness of health disparities to reduce premature deaths and disabilities among black Americans of African descent through intervention, education, research and advocacy.
